Brief History of Emmanuel

Emmanuel Lutheran Church was founded by Dr. Emanuel D. Greenwald in 1831.  Since then, this congregation has been active in ministering to the diverse needs of the community.

Records indicate that the Emmanuel congregation built the first church in New Philadelphia in 1834.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church built a new house of worship on the same site in 1870, with additions in 1916 and 1954-1955.  This sanctuary and annex was destroyed by fire in 1970.

The current church was dedicated in May 1972.  We will celebrate our 175th Anniversary October 2006.
